Enjoy magical landscapes in the Ullswater Valley whilst completing the iconic 22 mile Ullswater Way over 3 days! This route was launched by the Lake District National Park on 25th April 2016 – Nicola, your guide and accredited Nordic Walking Instructor, was featured on Border News walking this route on the launch day.
Enjoy the vibrant greens during Spring in the Ullswater Valley. You will have views into many valleys leading away from Ullswater, towards the south is the Kirkstone Pass and to the North, Blencathra & the Eden Valley.
Your luggage will be taken to your accommodation each day & your car will be left at your first night’s accommodation. Although the walking will not be too strenuous I must highlight that some of the terrain may be technical and I would be happy to discuss this with anyone who may be concerned about the Lakeland Trails around the Lake.
Thursday evening – Arrival at Glenridding Hotel, a luxury hotel on the shores of Ullswater, newly refurbished after the floods of December 2015. The Luxury price for this break will include a Lake View. The hotel has an indoor swimming pool & spa facilities, so feel free to bring your costume for a pre-walking dip!
Dinner at Fellbites at 7pm to meet your fellow walkers, along with a gear talk by Charles Sproson, Nicola’s husband, a local mountain guide.
Day 1 – 10 mile guided walk north along the western shore of Ullswater from Glenridding to Pooley Bridge, including a short ascent to the top of Gowbarrow.
Friday evening’s accommodation is at 1863, Pooley Bridge where dinner will also be served in their fabulous restaurant.
Day 2 – beginning with a short 1st Aid talk by Ross from Reach Beyond Adventure, based in the valley, a fountain of local knowledge for those who would like to ask more! Followed by a full tour of the Lake on the Ullswater Steamers (lots of under cover and a bar on boa
rd!) The steamers will tell you all the landmarks around the lake to look out for, finally we will walk our 5 miles to the hamlet of Sandwick and our secret gem in the fells.
Saturday evening: We can only obtain access to this accommodation by foot or quad bike! Luxury room price will be en suite under the famous Beckside café, and the cheaper price will be for accommodation in a pod with shared bathroom for 2 rooms, with a short field walk from the main accommodation – literally on the shores on the lake – something quite special. The pod rooms are quite small (1 is a bunk bed room) but there is cosy sitting room for extra space too. Both accommodation types will be eating in the lovely café where Charlie Sproson will give you a basic navigation talk in which he will also focus on the following day’s guided or unguided walk. Dinner will also be served here – local venison stew using all local ingredients alongside!
Day 3 – The 6 mile walk back to Glenridding under the crags of Place Fell with panoramic views of the Helvellyn Massif, and looking up into the valleys of Glecoyne, Glenridding, and Grisedale can be taken at your own pace, the route is clearly marked although we can arrange a guide at a cost of £30 per head.
Alternatively, if you are keen to explore the valleys behind Place Fell and head onto the Beda Fell Ridgeline we can offer an optional extra at £30 per head for a half day of £50 per head for a full 6/7 hour day… the route can be discussed and planned with anyone interested according to fitness levels and mountain skills … But whichever route you choose, low or high level, this will be a day to remember!
All packed lunches will be provided during your holiday.
Afternoon tea is included at the Helvellyn Kitchen, Glenridding, before heading home.
