Nordic Walking the Windermere Way, 5 Day Break

In the heart of the English Lake District, Nicola Sproson from Nics Nordic Walks, and her team of walk leaders, will guide you around The Windermere Way, a lesser known route in The Lakes. The 44 mile loop of Lake Windermere incorporating the tops of 6 Lakeland fells around the Lake.  Fabulous views right into the mountains can been seen from all the fell tops and from Gummers How, at the southern end of the route, on a clear day, we can see Blackpool Tower & Morecambe Bay.  This 5 day break will give you 4 days’ guided walking with a day off in the middle, along with a Beatrix Potter Treat on day 4 as an optional extra, dependent on availability – spending the afternoon on an exclusive visit to Castle Cottage, Beatrix Potter’s marital home for 30 years. This National Trust property is not open to the public, but our guide Mandy Marshall, will show us around the gardens, 17C barn and house. We will also hear about the legacy Beatrix left to preserve the unique Lake District landscape, its distinctive sheep,  and how Mandy has worked with Cumbrian farmers to develop the brand “Herdwick- tweed with provenance” http://www.herdwick.co.uk/The-Heritage-of-Herdwick.html.

Along the whole route Nicola will point out any features/properties with a connection to Beatrix Potter.

Day 1 (10 miles) : Arrive Waterhead, Ambleside ready to walk by 11am.  Our first & steepest ascent, onto Wansfell will start the day, heading down into Troutbeck and onto Orrest Head, our 2nd fell of the day before descending into Windermere Village

Day 2 (12.5 miles) :  Heading South again, this day will take us down to the shores of Lake Windermere and back up onto Brantfell for views of the whole Lake, and across to the Langdales and Kentmere Horseshoe also.  After weaving towards the Winster Valley, we head onto Gummers How, the most southerly fell of the route, where, on a clear day, we can see Blackpool Tower as well as Lakeland views.  Then we descend to the National Trust’s Fell Foot Park, a hot drink & fab cake will welcome us before the 5 minute ferry ride across to The Lakeside Hotel, or Lakeside steamer point to return you to your accommodation if not staying at Lakeside.

Day 3: DAY OFF!! Lots of options to keep you occupied during your day without your car! The  Windermere Lake Cruises leave from outside the Lakeside Hotel or Bowness dependent on your accommodation choice. They stop at Ambleside, Bowness-on-Windermere & Lakeside, so all day to meander around the hubbub of these Lakeland towns. Or just stay put, enjoying the fabulous views of the lake, Lastly, but by no means least…another option is for Mandy, our tour guide for Day 4, to take you on a Historic Houses of Lakeland Tour.  This can be arranged with Mandy on a personal basis, by contacting her independently by email:

mandymarshall2012@gmail.comDinner is not included on Wednesday evening, as you may have other ideas and want to explore elsewhere.

Day 4 (8 miles): On our shortest walking day, we will leave soon after breakfast walking from Lakeside up over Stott Park Heights via High Dam, and down to the very edge of the Lakeshore for a 4 mile lakeshore walk towards the Ferry or Sawrey dependent on your accommodation choice.  We will start earlier and finish around lunchtime if you choose to have a tour at Castle Cottage, Beatrix Potter’s marital home.

Day 5 (13.5 miles): Our last and longest day in the fells will lead us up towards Wray Castle along the shores of Windermere using a new path, perfect to gain a good Nordic Walking speed. Cutting across the fields to Skelwith Bridge for lunch at the famous Chesters On The River café for lunch http://www.chestersbytheriver.co.uk    gaining energy to head up Loughrigg, our last fell on the route, which towers above Ambleside, sitting at the head of Lake Windermere, before descending to our FINISH… back in Ambleside.

Although the walking will not be too strenuous I must highlight that some of the terrain may be technical and I would be happy to discuss this with anyone who may be concerned about the Lakeland trails around the Lake.  We will all walk together on Day 1, following this, we will have another of Nic’s walk leaders joining us, allowing the group to be split according to ability if necessary for the remaining parts of the route.

On completing The Windermere Way you will be presented with a map explaining the route to take away with you.
